Radon Gas 101

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas formed by the natural decay of uranium in soil and rock. Outdoors, radon disperses harmlessly. The danger occurs when it accumulates inside enclosed spaces, like your home.

As radon decays, it releases radioactive particles that, when inhaled, damage lung tissue and cause lung cancer. Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, responsible for over 21,000 U.S. deaths annually.

Radon is measured in picocuries (PEE-koh-kyoo-reez) per liter (pCi/L). The EPA recommends action at 4 pCi/L or above.  The average untreated indoor radon level in Utah is 4.5 to 5.3 pCi/L. The national average indoor level is 1.3 pCi/L.

How Does Radon Enter Your Home

Radon gas enters your home or business by seeping up from the soil sourounding the structure. Air pressure inside the building is usually lower than the pressure in the soil so it acts as a vacuum, sucking the soil gas which includes radon, in through the cracks and gaps in the foundation.

Foundation Cracks

Cracks in concrete slabs and foundation walls are the most common entry point.

Gaps around plumbing, electrical, and HVAC penetrations through the foundation.

Crawlspace Floors

Unencapsulated crawlspaces allow radon to rise directly from soil.
